Familiar Mercedes-Benz G-Class is all new

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagen as it's affectionately called, has stayed true to its heavy-duty off-road origins while slowly adapting to modernity. The overall look is much smoother, lending credence to the company's hyperbolic prose that says the G-Class looks like it's cast from a single piece of metal. The 4.0-liter V8 engine puts out 416 horsepower and 450-pound-feet of torque.

Still a no-compromise off-roader, with ladder-chassis and rigid rear axle.

The G-Class gained extra measurements though.

Aluminum is used for the doors and hood, with high-strength steel employed for the A- and B-pillars, the automaker says.

There are four driving modes, "Comfort", "Sport", "Eco" and "Individual". While hardcore off-roaders might balk at the G abandoning its solid front-axle, this setup should make this 4x4 much better on road, which is where a lot of Gs spend their time. The German manufacturer has done something very hard with the latest generation of the iconic auto - it has kept the design elements that have long defined the classic G-Wagen, but at the same time it has overhauled the vehicle to create something thoroughly modern.

Helping to unveil the new model here is actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a long-time G-wagon enthusiast and, like the modern G-Class - a collaboration of Mercedes and Magna Steyr, born in Austria and known for his rough-and-rugged roles.

The car's larger dimensions also mean a 40mm-longer wheelbase, contributing to more rear passenger space, an area that was criticised in its predecessor.

The ground clearance increased by 6 mm to 241 mm and a maximum fording depth increased by 10 cm to 70 cm. The SUV will complement devyatietazhnyj "automatic" 9G-Tronic, the transmitting traction on both axles at a ratio of 40% to 60% in the rear. The vehicle can ford water up to 27.6-inches deep, has a breakover angle of 26-degrees, departure angle of 30-degrees, and approach angle of 31-degrees. And Benz improved the big G's fording depth to 27.6 inches, up almost 4 from the 2018 truck.

Aiding the G-Class's off-road performance is what Mercedes calls "G-Mode", an electronic program that optimizes the steering, throttle mapping, optional adaptive dampers, and transmission programming for off-road use.

Mercedes has retained the old car's famous differential locks and low-range gearbox, instead of fitting more modern push-button alternatives.

Mercedes' third-generation B-Class has been spotted undergoing winter development testing ahead of a planned launch in the "next few years", according to a Mercedes spokesperson.

The hydraulic steering has been replaced by an electromechanical set-up, enabling driver assistance aids such as semi-automated parking to be installed on the new G-Class.

Mercedes-Benz hasn't announced pricing for the 2019 G500 yet, but we don't expect it to be available for less than $125,000 when it hits showrooms in late 2018.

Rumors about the three-pointed star introducing a lighter, leaner Gelandewagen have been floating around for years and the 2018 Detroit Auto Show allows us to meet the terrain tamer in the flesh.
