"Get Out" nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture

The 90th annual Academy Awards ceremony will offer a bit of everything: epic films, indies with heart, female directors, black best actor nominees, a Pakistani-American screenwriter, Meryl Streep (obviously), and undoubtedly lots of dramatic lectures about social justice.

⦿ In the documentary field, Jane, about primatologist Jane Goodall somehow missed the cut, this despite universal acclaim and a 99 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But first, a few overall takes. Before this, Warren Beatty in 1978 and James L. Brooks in 1983, got nominated for all the three categories at once. I believe her nomination speaks to the strength of her film.

"I could not be more excited". Guillermo del Toro's film The Shape of Water led with thirteen nominations. It also looks good for Guillermo Del Toro as best director.

Nominated for her work in Mudbound, Morrison is also credited for work in Black Panther, Dope, Fruitvale Station and Cake. It's about damn time, if I do say so myself. The performance earned him a supporting actor nod, and at 88, Plummer is now the oldest actor to ever be nominated.

Some observers might point to the the nominees in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Actress categories still being entirely comprised of white people as evidence that there is still much to do. As mentioned above, the one that got me the most excited was Get Out.

The Oscars nominations for 2018 have now officially been announced. After all, "Lady Bird" has won various critics' awards. Will Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri be able to continue its momentum? That film was phenomenal.

"I just spoke to Daniel".

Daniel Day Lewis' alleged final performance in "Phantom Thread" has finally helped the film join the awards race after being seemingly forgotten.

Following a year dogged by the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations, which have rocked all movie studios.

"A Fantastic Woman" follows Marina, a waitress and nightclub singer who must put her life back together after her older boyfriend dies suddenly. If Gerwig wins, she'll become only the second woman in the history of the Academy to win an Oscar for Best Director. There certainly is a chance for someone like Saoirse Ronan to sneak in a victory, but I think it's going in Frances McDormand's direction.

Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman. Maybe not Streep though.

The nominees for best supporting actor include: Willem Dafoe ("The Florida Project"), Woody Harrelson ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"), Richard Jenkins ("The Shape of Water"), Christopher Plummer ("All the Money in the World") and Sam Rockwell ("Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri").

Frances McDormand is tipped to be this year's victor for her role as a grieving mother in Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Tom - who is married to Rita Wilson - said: "Let me say it right now, the bar was far away".

Since 1990, only the 2003 fantasy epic "Lord of the Rings; The Return of the King" snapped that trend to win the top Oscar honor. But I'd really love for Metcalf to get this one.

The writer-director of coming-of-age story Lady Bird becomes only the fifth female film-maker to get a nomination in this category. Jordan Peele is up there as one of the great voices of our generation.

The Academy nominated a woman director, a transperson, and people of color across categories. Can we please give Roger Deakins an Oscar this year? Transgender filmmakers also made history, with Yance Ford becoming the first transgender director ever nominated for an Oscar with her short film Strong Island.
