The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement to trade quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, according to multiple media reports.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Smith has agreed to a new four-year extension with Washington. The deal can not become official until the beginning of the new league year on March 14 and there was no immediate confirmation by the two teams.

Let's run through the players affected by this move.

Smith becomes the franchise quarterback for Washington after throwing for 31,888 yards and 183 touchdowns in 12 National Football League seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and Chiefs. In each of the last three seasons, he has completed no less than 64 percent of his passes.

Cousins is likely to fetch a big offer and be targeted by several teams in the offseason.

The Redskins look like they'll be parting ways with their quarterback Kirk Cousins after franchise tagging his the last two seasons. Moving Smith frees $17 million in salary cap space.

It is easy to envision Cousins, who turns 30 in August, approaching or possibly exceeding those figures, considering Smith's four-year extension with the Redskins.

In an interesting wrinkle to this, former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians openly admitted the team wanted to draft Patrick Mahomes or Deshaun Watson previous year - only for Kansas City and Houston to trade up and leapfrog Arizona in the draft. Now it's time to see if it pays off. He was a first-round talent who dropped to the third round because of injury concerns, yet has played to a first-round grade - and stayed healthy - during his first two seasons with in the league. He appears set to take over for Kirk Cousins in Washington.

The Washington Redskins believe they have found a new franchise quarterback. Arizona, Buffalo, the New York Jets and possibly Cleveland and Jacksonville may also be in the market for Cousins. It was a ideal storm brewing for seven years, and Cousins is now ready to cash in.

The 49ers were once considered a team that would pursue Cousins because of the tie between the quarterback and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, but the 49ers got their quarterback of the future when they traded a second-round pick to the Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo.
