Modi to meet Palestinian Authority chairman during Mideast tour

The Indian premier will visit Ramallah first on his three-day tour of the region between February 9 and 12, which will also take in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

The presidency Wednesday welcomed the upcoming "historical and significant" visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is expected to arrive in Ramallah on Saturday.

Bhaskar said India's refusal in December to support U.S. moves to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital was consistent with its unwavering support for the PA.

"This reflects the commitment of the UAE government in diversity and tolerance", said Raveesh Kumar, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs. Kumar said that the temple was a 200-year-old structure, and its existence showed not just the extent of engagement with the country, but also how Indians of all faiths had been allowed freedom of practising their religion in Oman.

New Delhi is also preparing for three high-level visits, from the region's most powerful leaders, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Jordanian King Abdullah II in February, and Saudi King Salman later this year.

Briefing reporters on PM Modi's agenda during his visit to Oman, Mr Mridul Kumar said good ties with the Gulf nation is very crucial for India as it is located in a very important geo- strategic position. Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, had then assured that the demand will be fulfilled, Kumar said.

This will be PM Modi's second visit to the UAE. He also meet the Indian Community in Abu Dhabi and lay the foundation stone of a Hindu Temple to be built in Abu Dhabi.

On February 10, Prime Minister is scheduled to reach UAE and address the sixth World Government Summit in Dubai - where India is the Guest of Honor country.

"If we look at the investment from UAE to India, it exceeds $11 billion, about Dollars 4-5 billion in the format of FDI (foreign direct investment)", Banna said. "We have de-hyphenated our relations with Palestine and Israel and now we see them both as mutually independent and exclusive and as part of this policy the prime minister is undertaking this visit", said Mr Bala Bhaskar, an official in charge of West Asia in the ministry. He will also visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and a Shiva temple afterwards.
