Ice hockey: Like father, like son - Donato nets for the US

Netminder Ryan Zapolski stopped 21 shots, setting Team USA up for a pivotal matchup Saturday against the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation.

"The first game was big for me just to get a couple shifts and realize that I belong here", Terry explained.

The quick response could have been disheartening to the USA team that had surrendered a game-tying goal with less than 90 seconds remaining two days prior in an overtime loss to Slovenia. Teams receive three points for regulation wins, two points for wins in overtime/shootout and one point for an overtime/shootout loss. "It's a dream come true and scoring definitely helps", Donato said.

Harvard's Ryan Donato, son of former NHL player Ted Donato, scored a pair of power play goals to spark the US men's hockey team to a 2-1 win against Slovakia. "You look like you have the puck a lot, but you might not get as many Grade-A chances as you would think just because you're possessing the puck, so I think we can learn from that too, get more bodies to the net, get more pucks to the net".

"The experience we gained from losing that lead in game one was we had to play differently tonight".

Donato, who plays for his father Ted at Harvard, Terry (Denver University), Greenway (Boston University) and American Hockey League scoring star Chris Bourque were all additions to the US after the pre-Olympic Deutschland Cup, during which the USA struggled to score - particularly against Slovakia goaltender Jan Laco.

Speed is the Americans' identity and it was on display against a big Slovakia team that beat Russian Federation in its opener. However, Andrej Kudrna got a stick on the puck, deflecting it under the blocker arm of Ryan Zapolski and into the net.

"Our energy in the third wasn't great", Granato said. Other games send Finland against Norway and Sweden against Germany.

The Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation face Slovenia later.

"We'll learn from this", O'Neill said.

Donato's second power-play goal and eventual game victor came at 2:51 of the third period when the collegiate athlete neatly tucked in a backhand from the top of the crease.

"They may be bigger, but I think we have a really fast team here, " said Terry, who assisted Donato's first goal Friday. "I'm proud of the team and hopefully we can start looking to the next game and surprise somebody else". Granato doesn't expect his youngest players to be wide-eyed at the prospect of facing the likes of Pavel Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk.
