Cantlay and Finau, each seeking a second US PGA Tour title, wrapped up their five-under-par 66s shortly before darkness halted play with a dozen players still on the course. It will be the first time Woods has played tournaments in consecutive weeks since 2015.

Bad light brought an early end to the second day with some players still to finish their second rounds, but sitting joint-top at seven-under par with Patrick Cantlay and Sam Saunders is McDowell after going three shots better than yesterday's opening round.

Woods was unwilling to commit to playing back-to-weeks just a couple days ago, giving a pretty odd answer when asked about it.

Woods's eight bogeys included three in a row on the back nine as he battled to a five-over par 76.

That's as good a par as you'll see on that hole and another highlight for Cantlay, who is looking for his second PGA Tour victory after winning the Shriners Hospitals For Children Open back in November. He launched a string of three straight birdies with a near hole-in-one at the par-three sixth, his 15th of the day.

"Like it's two shots a tournament he has to give because of all that that goes on around".

Yet he had a 15-footer for par and he missed it for a bogey. Cantlay got to five-under with a birdie at the 17th, where he blasted out of a greenside bunker to 10 feet and made the putt. 4, 7 and 8 - hitting to 2 1/2 feet on the seventh and 3 1/2 feet on the eighth. We're used to hearing him come back from one of his sabbaticals and say he expects to win. Woods had three consecutive bogeys early on the back nine Friday and didn't play almost well enough to make up for it.

Rory McIlroy's up-close look at Tiger Woods has the Northern Ireland star convinced the 14-time major champion is "very close" in his latest comeback bid. He needed 32 putts.

"I played well today. I missed every tee shot left and I did not putt well, didn't feel very good on the greens and consequently never made a run", he lamented afterward. "I've dealt with it for a very long time". "The greens were fast and bumpy, and I knew that", Woods said.

"I think it rewards really smart, safe golf a lot, just picking your spots, not trying to get overly aggressive. I kept missing it above the hole and that's what was ticking me off".

Padraig Harrington finished his second round on +2 and is on the cut line. "I've just got to play more tournaments", he said. "(But) just the inconsistency of it.

Woods will be getting more tournament exposure next week after having committed to The Honda Classic at PGA National.
