Bon Secours to merge with Mercy Health


The parent company of Bon Secours hospitals says it plans to merge with Cincinnati-based Mercy Health to create one of the largest health systems in the U.S.

The only in-state overlap between Mercy and Bon Secours can be found in Kentucky. In a news release sent Wednesday, the two health systems say the merger will create one of the largest health systems in the country, covering seven states.

Along with the 43 hospitals, the combined system would include more than 50 home health agencies, hospice agencies, skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.

Bon Secours is a nonprofit health system that has has facilities in Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, Florida, New York and Kentucky.

"Working together, our strong faith-based heritage fuels our mutual focus to provide efficient and effective health care for each patient who comes through our doors", he said. The system includes assets of $6.8 billion and almost 500 care facilities including 23 hospitals and 26 post-acute care facilities including senior living communities, hospice programs and home health agencies.

"This merger strengthens our shared commitment to improve population health, eliminate health disparities, build strength to address social determinants of health, and invest heavily in innovating our approaches to health care", he said.

"This merger creates future opportunity to deepen our commitment to our existing communities and expand the health ministry into complementary service areas across United States", the organizations stated. They expect to complete the merger by the end of the year.

Bon Secours is sponsored by Bon Secours Ministries and was founded by the Sisters of Bon Secours. Cincinnati-based Mercy Health has 23 hospitals, 26 post-acute facilities and more than 33,500 employees throughout OH and Kentucky. Local Bon Secours officials declined to comment on the merger.
