Deal with North Korea 'Very Much in the Making'

"Kim Jong-un talked about denuclearisation with the South Korean representatives, not just a freeze", Trump said on Twitter on Thursday night. "No talks and zooming straight to a Kim Jong Un-Donald J. Trump summit are both likely to end badly". Pyongyang has hit back by calling Trump a "dotard".

As aides scrambled to catch up with Trump's decision - taken before consulting key confidantes - the White House sent mixed messages about conditions.

Trump expressed his hope that Kims invitation signals his desire to give the North Korean people a brighter future, it said.

If Trump meets with Kim, it will mark the first time a sitting USA president has met with a North Korean leader, as both Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton waited until they were out of office to meet with the country's leaders, reports ABC News.

Trump said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had "spoken at length" about the planned but so far unscheduled summit, and that Xi had said he "appreciates that the U.S.is working to solve the problem diplomatically rather than going with the ominous alternative".

What makes the upcoming summit even more complex for the United States is that China is both ally and adversary.

Both leaders say they want the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, but historically their governments have interpreted that to mean quite different things: Washington sees it in terms of North Korean unilateral disarmament; Pyongyang envisions an end to the "hostile policies" of the USA and the formal removal of the nuclear deterrent umbrella that has sheltered South Korea from its northern neighbour. "I think that is actually what put North Korea on a similar stage". Tillerson said what stood out for him was what he termed the dramatic shift in Kim Jong Un's position. Doubts about strategy coordination within the USA government can not be wiped away. These days, Russia's entire foreign policy appears oriented toward weakening America's worldwide standing.

In 2009, Clinton finally made it to North Korea for a visit on a mission to free two imprisoned U.S. journalists used by Pyongyang as leverage to lure a significant American to the country.

"Our assessment was that the North Koreans weren't serious about denuclearisation and therefore sitting down to a summit just accords legitimacy.to the regime, not just the leader, without achieving any concrete national security objective for the United States", said Michael McFaul, US ambassador to Russian Federation under Obama. Meanwhile, the average North Korean is inches shorter than their South Korean counterparts due to decade after decade of malnutrition. Holding talks in either the US or North Korea seem unlikely. But why should the presence of two humans in a room have such high stakes? The Trump administration will have to face up to thorny realities of great power cooperation and competition.

Abe himself cited the "national threat" emanating from North Korea as one of the reasons for calling a snap Lower House election last October. Three analysts studied satellite images taken Jan 17 and Jan 30 and discussed them in two reports, the first Feb 2 and the second Feb 13, as the Olympic Games were in full swing.

At the time, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said that the exercises would go ahead once the Paralympics concluded. "So I don't know who Trump is talking to about North Korea, I'm not sure anybody does". For the Trump team, the dilemma could become acute. There is no doubt Pyongyang has set an immediate target for its "smile campaign" in the U.S. The North Koreans have a history of eating carrots and ignoring sticks in past negotiations.

Senator Mark R Warner, vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, said that diplomacy is the right path forward to deal with North Korea, but at the same time, due to Pyongyang's history of obfuscation and worldwide defiance, the United States must proceed with caution.

However, other presidents have lodged economic sanctions against North Korea, as Trump has.

The film sees the global community trying and failing to isolate North Korea following its efforts to develop nuclear weapons. What will happen to the US alliance with South Korea? "The firm stance of Japan and the United States will never be swayed". Like it or not, we are about to find out whether President Trump is capable of handling all that.

"The secretary of state needs to lead these discussions".
