History Shows Peril and Promise of Trump-Kim Summit

The summit was all the more remarkable given the intense acrimony in recent months between North Korea and the world's two leading powers, the USA and China.

"The issue of denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula can be resolved", Kim was quoted as saying, "if South Korea and the United States respond to our efforts with goodwill, create an atmosphere of peace and stability while taking progressive and synchronous measures for the realization of peace".

If China prepares an emergency exit for the North again, there may be no necessity for any summit meeting between the two Koreas or that between the US and the North.

"The joint concert is meaningful, but watching just the performance by the South is also meaningful". Trump seems to be saying that if North Korean leader Kim Jong-un does not show a clear willingness to follow through on his pledge to scrap his nuclear weapons, the US will put greater trade pressure on South Korea.

It was the first time a North Korean leader personally attended a South Korean concert, and Kim showed up with his wife Ri Sol-ju at the East Pyongyang Grand Theatre.

Red Velvet, who sang their hit "Bad Boy" and were dressed conservatively in Pyongyang, rather than wearing their favored midriff-baring T-shirts and sexy stockings, were apparently of particular interest to Kim.

"All in all, Kim has astutely fractured the USA -led unified front to denuclearize the North", Nagy said.

After Kim's visit to Beijing last week, China said the North Korean leader indicated he was willing to talk with Trump about giving up nuclear weapons.

Full video of their and other South Korean singers' performances wasn't immediately available.

US, South Korea agree in principle on new trade deal - White House
The trade renegotiation between the USA and South Korea occurs as the United States turns its attention to the Korean peninsula. South Korea Trade Minister Kim Hyun-chong announced the deal as well on Monday in Seoul .

The musicians, who arrived in the North Korean capital on Saturday by a chartered civilian flight, included girl group Red Velvet; Seohyun, a member of Girls' Generation; YB, a five-member rock band; Kim Kwang-min, a pianist; and legendary singer Cho Yong-pil.

Defector Lee was doubtful that the Pyongyang concert would prefigure a change in policy toward South Korean content.

The South had allegedly proposed Psy be added to the line-up, but officials in the conservative North expressed concerns about the singer's raunchy performance style. What followed was a group performance from the 11 acts of Cho's song Dear Friend and the two songs that wrapped up the North Korean artists' Seoul concert in February.

The South's 160-member art troupe will again perform April 3, this time alongside North Korean counterparts, before returning home.

"The North's audience applauded our performance much louder than we expected and even sang along to our songs.it was a big relief", band member Yeri told reporters.

The North Korean nuclear impasse would be tough to solve even if the USA and South Korea coordinated policies like clockwork. (EPA) South Korean groups perform during a rehearsal in Pyongyang.

Kim has also deployed his family, including Ri and his sister, Kim Yo Jong, to soften his and his country's image.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said Tokyo is open to talks with Kim, and Japanese media reported last week that Pyongyang is considering a June summit. The deployment of such powerful weaponry during past drills has frequently drawn an angry response from the North.

It marked the second time a South Korean team of taekwondo artists performed in Pyongyang, and the first since 2002. The IOC president was in Pyongyang to discuss development of sports in North Korea and the preparation of its athletes for subsequent worldwide events like the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Games.
