Israel's military says Iranian forces based in neighboring Syria fired about 20 projectiles at Israeli positions in the Golan Heights.

The official news agency SANA said the attack occurred in the countryside in Kisweh, just south of Damascus, an area known to have numerous Syrian army military bases.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who had been urging the U.S. "to fix or nix" the Iranian nuclear deal, has supported President Donald Trump's "bold decision" to walk out of it, saying the agreement did not reduce Tehran's aggression but dramatically increased it.

Israeli missiles left up to 14 fighters dead, including seven Iranians, in Homs last month, two days after the Syrian regime carried out an alleged chemical attack in Douma. There were no Israeli casualties.

"Iran is now seeking to implant very unsafe weapons in Syria to be used against Israel for the specific goal of our destruction". Iran blamed Israel and vowed to retaliate.

It should be noted that many Israelis who hold American citizenship received a message from the US Embassy in Israel not to travel to the Golan Heights.

Occasional clashes have erupted between Israel and the Syrian regime and its Hezbollah ally in the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967.

The agency had earlier reported "explosions" in the southern suburb, while state television broadcast images of fires in the area targeted by the strikes.

Israel's military has been on heightened alert in recent days, fearing an attack from Syria. "Several bases were targeted", the spokesman said, some rockets were intercepted, and Israel has "responded". Israel has not confirmed or denied involvement.

His trip Wednesday came as Syrian state-run media said Israel struck a military outpost near the capital, Damascus, the previous night. The strike began within an hour of the end of President Trump's speech withdrawing the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal.

The latest air strikes will also add to the pressure on Israel's relationship with Moscow, which has partnered with Iran in propping up the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.
