Israel said the targets included weapons storage, logistics sites and intelligence centres used by elite Iranian forces in Syria. Russian Federation is the major power broker in Syria, where its military intervention turned the tide in favor of government forces, and Israel coordinates military action there with Moscow. Israel worries that Iran is trying to send weapons to fighters in Lebanon.

The Trump administration portrayed its rejection of that agreement as a response, in part, to Tehran's interventions in the Middle East, underpinning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's tough line towards Iran.

As tensions escalated, especially in its northern region bordering Syria, the Israeli Premier called upon the worldwide community to prevent "the Iranian Al-Quds force from establishing itself in Syria".

Israel's political and security establishment has been unified and vocal in vowing to thwart Iran's efforts to entrench itself militarily across Israel's northern frontier and to build what Israeli and US officials refer to as a land corridor from Iran, through Iraq and Syria, to Lebanon.

The U.S. and other countries view Iran's presence in Syria as an exploitation of the country's instability.

Visiting the Golan Heights on Friday, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman urged Mr Assad to "throw the Iranians out", saying "they are only hurting you". "That is what we have done and that is what we will continue doing", Netanyahu said.

There were no casualties on the Israeli side.

Earlier this week, Syrian state media said Israel struck a military outpost near Damascus. "That's why only Syrian soldiers were killed and wounded", Marouf said.

Rouhani did not mention Israel's strikes in Syria early on Thursday, or those against the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, also on Thursday. Conricus said four of the rockets were intercepted, while the others fell short of their targets. The Israeli regime has even set up field hospitals to treat wounded militants evacuated from Syria.

"The Zionist regime's repeated attacks on Syrian soil under self-proclaimed, baseless pretexts amount to a blatant violation of Syria's sovereignty and goes against all global conventions", Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said in an early Friday statement. It also struck multiple Syrian air-defense systems, including long-, medium- and short-range Russian-made missiles, high-altitude missiles and medium-range air-defense systems. Residents reported loud sounds that rocked their buildings. The rocket attack against Israel appeared to be in response to Israeli strikes on southern Syria on Wednesday. The state TV station said the attacks were foiled.

The suspected Israeli strike came after the IDF gave orders to open public bomb shelters in the Golan Heights after reports of "irregular Iranian movements" inside Syria. Warning sirens were sounded in some Israeli communities in the Golan Heights.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton advocated military action against Iran on multiple occasions before going to work for President Trump recently. The Observatory said the missiles targeted depots and rocket launchers that likely belonged to Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard, killing at least 15 people, including eight Iranians.
