Toronto Crack Mayor's Brother Wins Ontario Election

Ford claims he will reduce taxes and keep more money in everyone's pockets.

The Liberals, who have been in government for the past 15 years, could drop to single-digit seats in the legislature, losing official party status.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has won her seat in the provincial election.

The NDP's position as the Official Opposition marks a turnaround for the party consistently stuck in third place since Bob Rae's New Democratic government was defeated in 1995. Voter distribution - combined with Ontario's first-past-the-post electoral system - translated the vote into 39 seats for the party.

Watson issued a statement shortly after Ford and the Progressive Conservatives won a majority mandate in the 42 Ontario election.

As long as the Liberal Party of Canada holds power, he added, the most these leaders can do is change how carbon pricing is structured. He beat out establishment favourite Christine Elliott after former leader Patrick Brown stepped down over sexual misconduct allegations that he denies. Ipsos said Ford's PC party would likely win power with a majority of seats in the province's legislature.

"We have delivered a government that is for the people", said Ford, promising economic growth and prosperity in a speech to supporters in Toronto.

While Ford's family troubles did not dent his lead in the last week of the campaign, he can not afford to let these issues take centre stage once in government.

He did not release a fully costed platform, prompting his rivals to warn of massive cuts to public services under a Tory government. To date there have been no details on how his government will pay for his campaign promises or what he considers government "inefficiencies".

We never received a solid plan from Doug Ford.

Ontario's new premier is undecided over whether he will attend Toronto's annual Pride parade later this month - and has previously said it is an event where men run down the street "buck naked".

"I talked to the prime minister yesterday", Ford said.

I asked him about that Friday.

Ford has promised to lower taxes, spend C$5 billion on the subway in Toronto and cut some C$6 billion from the provincial budget without eliminating jobs.

While it might just be an oversight on his part, he did take the time to tweet out a congratulations to Doug Ford on his win.

Rob Ford's term as mayor was plagued with scandals, and erratic behavior that culminated with his admission that he had smoked crack cocaine.

"I know that tonight is not the result we were looking for and no one feels that more sharply than I do, but this is not a moment where any of us should linger".

In pondering the lessons for the federal Liberals from the Ontario result, McKay said they need to ask "why would people embrace such a manifestly obvious unqualified candidate for premier; what is it that drives people to make those decisions that many of us would regard as nearly irrational?"

The last few days of Ford's campaign were dominated by news of a lawsuit against him from Rob Ford's widow alleging mismanagement of the family business. In the 2014 election, 173,072 votes were reported from 1,388 schools. Each time Wynne's image came up onto the screen the crowd booed. In comparison, there was a 47 percent voter turnout in the 2016 general election, a presidential election year when high voter turnout is expected.

Almost every Liberal cabinet minister was defeated, including Yasir Naqvi, Charles Sousa, Glenn Thibeault, Steven Del Duca, Kevin Flynn, Eleanor McMahon and Chris Ballard.

The election has also marked a stunning collapse for the Liberals, who governed the province for the last 15 years. Thursday night was absolutely brutal for the Liberals, and much of it constituted a personal rejection of Wynne. "Suction cups open the envelope so we can just take the ballot pages out".
