The Spaniards' preparations for the World Cup have been rocked by the sudden dismissal of Julen Lopetegui this week following his appointment as the new Real Madrid boss.

"Modesty aside, I think that I am the world's best player", Neymar quipped in an exchange with the hosts of Desimpedidos, a Brazilian YouTube channel.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo controls the ball during a training session at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi on June 14, 2018. On two occasions, September 18, 2014 and December 7, 2014, Messi has scored a hat trick the day after Ronaldo did.

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is still one of the world's top players but faces a tough test against a Spain squad that is one of the top favorites to win this year's World Cup.

The Real Madrid and Portugal footballer, 33, was accused a year ago of defrauding tax authorities of €14.8m (£12.9m), charges he denies.

The World Cup hasn't been where Ronaldo has impressed the most, though.

Ronaldo had nine goals in the four European Championships in which he played, including three in the title-winning campaign in France.

Spain appeared to have shrugged off a tumultuous backroom crisis and were cruising to a 3-2 victory until Ronaldo curled a lovely free-kick in injury time to spoil the Spanish party.

"More than his physical shape, it's his mental strength", mused Portugal coach Fernando Santos. Real Madrid will know that they have to find a suitable replacement for Ronaldo, whose future at the Santiago Bernabeu is still uncertain for next season.

He has been criticised many times for his style of play with Spain.

According to both reports, the Spanish tax agency has yet to agree to substitute a fine for a potential suspended sentence.

His response about his performance was completely Ronaldo fashion. "Cristiano is Cristiano, there's nothing else to say about him".
