Luis Suarez will make his 100th worldwide appearance for Uruguay today after being named in the starting XI for their second World Cup match against Saudi Arabia in Rostov.

In their final group stage game on June 25, Uruguay face Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia play Egypt.

Despite only 3.4 million people to choose from, Uruguay have long punched above their weight in global soccer, lifting the first ever World Cup in 1930 and producing the infamous "Maracanazo" by beating hosts Brazil to win it again in 1950.

Suarez, who became the sixth Uruguay player to reach the century mark, tallied the only goal for La Celeste in the 23rd minute in front of 42,678 fans at the Rostov Arena. We had a lot of possession and stood well on defence. However, a Saudi Arabia victory will make the final group game for them and Uruguay the determining factor for advancing.

They will face each other on Monday in Samara with first place in Group A on the line.

"I am more satisfied with the team now after this match because the first game was really bad".

The 31-year-old Suarez, whose previous two World Cups both ended in bans after his infamous 2010 handball against Ghana and bite on Italy's Giorgio Chiellini four years later, took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Mohammed Al-Owais to put Uruguay ahead midway through the first half.

Sanchez and Suarez wasted half-chances to extend the lead for Uruguay, who also won their opener against Egypt 1-0 thanks to a set-piece goal, defender Jose Gimenez heading home a late victor.

The Barcelona striker seems to have a flair for a milestone match after getting sent off in his debut against Colombia in 2007 and scoring against Bolivia in his 50th cap. Jose Gimenez scored the victor for Uruguay in the 89th minute.

Muslera will also tie Ladislao Mazurkiewicz as the player to have made the most appearances for Uruguay at a World Cup. Sign up now for a free seven-day trial.

"We forgot about it as soon as we got to the hotel", Saudi Arabia midfielder Taisir Al-Jassim told a news conference on Tuesday.
