Trump says scandal-plagued EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has resigned

Kristin Mink, the Washington, D.C., mom who confronted then-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt while he was eating lunch this week, had a simple message for others frustrated with government officials: "Speak out".

Pruitt now joins the growing ranks of ex-Trump officials, a testament to President Trump's chaotic management style and poor judgment.

US President Donald Trump said Mr Pruitt had done "an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him". President Trump tweeted the announcement, saying the agency's deputy administrator will assume the position until the President nominates a new Secretary.

"He knows what the job entails and I'm confident in his abilities", Horner said. As head of the EPA, he lobbied Trump to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and make him the replacement. "I don't want to be a distraction.' And I think Scott felt that he was a distraction", said Trump. But Wheeler told The Hill newspaper this week that he's not interested in the top EPA job.

Pruitt faced several federal investigations, including those for misusing taxpayer funds and for renting a room from the wife of a lobbyist with business before the EPA, as he carried out Trump's agenda of rolling back environmental regulations. The good news that Andrew Wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist and the EPA's deputy director, would be taking over as acting administrator.

"Like Pruitt, Wheeler has expressed public skepticism about the consensus of climate scientists that the continued burning of fossil fuels is the primary cause of global warming", CBS reported.

Despite the laundry list of ethics complaints putting him on thin ice, Pruitt was invited to and appeared at the White House on Wednesday for Trump's Independence Day celebration, where he and other cabinet members received a shout-out from the president.

"There have been too many ethical lapses under Administrator Pruitt's watch and this decision is in the best interests of the agency and our country", Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) said in a statement.

"Facts are facts, fiction is fiction and a lie doesn't become true just because it appears on the front page of the newspaper", Pruitt said. He sought repeals of major Obama-era regulations like the Clean Power Plan and the Waters of the US, or WOTUS, rule while arguing EPA needed to go "back to basics" with a focus on cleaning up toxic waste sites under the Superfund program and boosting water infrastructure to combat lead poisoning.

Mink, a schoolteacher and mother of a 2-year-old son, set social media ablaze earlier this week after she posted a video of her calmly asking Pruitt to resign while he was eating lunch at a Washington restaurant.
