Ant-Man and the Wasp Conquers the Weekend Box Office with $76M

Ant-Man and the Wasp squashed the competition at the North American box office.

The original Ant-Man wasn't the box office killer either, and this weekend's cume is a giant increase over that the first's opening that is inline with the increase other Marvel sequels have seen over time. The MCU sequel debuted with $20.9 million in South Korea, a 78% leap from the original that almost eclipsed the $21.2 million the original earned in its entire theatrical run there.

This is intriguing, because in a movie landscape where doomsayers constantly predict the breaking point of superhero movie saturation is right around the corner, the masked and caped genre in general, and Marvel Studios in particular, have been doing much of the heavy lifting at the box office. On the other hand, Ant-Man opened in 2015 at $57 million. Between the billion dollar grossing tallies for Infinity War and Marvel's Black Panther, plus the impressive $727 million worldwide total now posted by Fox's Deadpool 2, superhero movies have made up 57 percent of the total box office in 2018.

Looking ahead, should Ant-Man deliver on the average 2.75x multiplier for a film in the MCU we're looking at a domestic performance around $209 million or so while a performance on the lower end would be closer to $180 million. (August 3), Italy (August 14), Portugal (August 15) and Japan (August 31), with the Chinese date still yet to be determined. The Pixar sequel is now just shy of topping Disney's Beauty and the Beast to become the 11th highest grossing domestic release of all-time and should have no problem moving into the top ten.

With the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marvel Studios now has their 20th movie that has opened in the #1 spot at the box office.

Rounding out the top five were Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The First Purge, and Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which earned $28.5 million, $17.1 million, and $7.3 million, respectively. Similar to Solo, Infinity War brought in just under $1 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $675 million. "It's the fourth in a franchise that they happen to keep very relevant", he said. The First Purge looks as if it might not climb to the same heights as its predecessors after a slightly softer opening and a "B-" CinemaScore, but given the film's $13 million budget it doesn't take almost as much for these films to turn a tidy profit.

It also speaks to audiences. As per last weekend, the global estimates are not available at this time. This is a notably strong performance given the impact of England's World Cup Quarter-Final game.
