Rain and cloudy skies could prevent sky gazers from watching Friday's lunar eclipse in Delhi, the city's Nehru Planetarium has said.
This lunar eclipse is not only the longest of the century, but it will also be a so-called blood moon, a phenomenon that earns its name due to a reddish hue that, according to NASA, comes from the Earth's sunlight being reflected onto the moon.
Is the eclipse safe to look at? . This will result in Mars coming close to the Earth, causing it to appear brighter than normal and it will be seen from evening to dawn towards the end of July. The atmosphere filters out most of the sun's blue light, so the moon looks red.
The eclipse will last for 1 hour and 43 minutes and will start around 11.54 pm IST on July 27.
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth lines up between the sun and the moon, blocking out the sun's light and casting a shadow on the lunar surface.
Aside political events, changes in weather patterns including events in the atmosphere like eclipses have also been seen as signs of the end times.
Solar eclipses can last for a few minutes, but some are only a few seconds long. That said, lunar myths form an integral part of Indian culture and religious customs, and enrich the entire anticipation and experience of the eclipse.
Rio de Janeiro's spectators cheered when the blood moon emerged from the fog. We won't get to see such a long lunar eclipse again until June 9, 2123, said a National Geographic report. The full eclipse will be at approximately 12.21am, the maximum viewing time. The next supermoon total lunar eclipse won't be until January 21, 2019, but today's historic eclipse will be "super" in its own right, as it will be the longest total lunar eclipse of the century.
Why does the moon turn red in a Blood Moon eclipse?
The event is co-organised by the Survey Department of the Ministry of Development, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali and the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam.
For about half the world, the "blood moon" will be partly or fully in Earth's shadow from 1:14 p.m.to 7:28 p.m. ET. In those countries, the moon will appear a deep copper red, because it will be reflecting the light from all the sunrises and sunsets happening around the globe.
