He was booked on felony vandalism and jailed on a 20,000-U.S. -dollar bond.

The chamber urged people to make a difference by voting instead of destroying public property.

Walk of Fame star recipients are selected by a committee that considers hundreds of applications each year.

A man with a pickax vandalized U.S. President Donald Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame early on Wednesday and later surrendered to police, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department said.

"I just seen a guy going to town on, I guess, the ground or whatever", Patricia Cox said. "Then, it's believed, he called police himself to report it, but left the scene before they got here", tweeted NBC LA's Jonathan Gonzalez at the time.

David Palmer, who says he witnessed the destruction, told KNBC-TV that afterwards he asked the vandal, "Why are you hitting that star?"

In that incident, a man, James Otis, 52, was charged with one felony count of vandalism for causing more than $US400 in damage to the star.
