He warned: "We continue to see a pervasive messaging campaign by Russian Federation to try to weaken and divide the United States".

Coats said that the "president himself" had told his agency heads to make securing the election process a "top priority".

U.S. President Donald Trump on August 1 called on Attorney-General Jeff Sessions to end the wide-ranging probe into Russian election meddling and possible ties between his campaign and Moscow, slamming it as "a disgrace" to the country.

Other heavy hitters on hand decrying Russian interference included Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, FBI chief Christopher Wray, national security adviser John Bolton and National Security Agency director Gen. Paul Nakasone. "Not a single vote was changed, so far as we can tell", he said. He gave no details.

He says, "When we say hire American, we mean all Americans". "We know there are others who have the capability and may be considering influence activities".

Manafort's trial opened on Tuesday with prosecutors accusing him of hiding from U.S. tax authorities millions of dollars from past lobbying work for the pro-Russia president of Ukraine, and failing to report his foreign bank accounts. He said the Department of Defense was "taking active measures to protect election security including monitoring our adversaries".

Homeland security chief Kirstjen Nielsen said: "Our democracy is in the crosshairs".

The warning to American adversaries came as top USA intelligence and homeland security officials raised alarms about potential efforts to influence the 2018 and 2020 elections.

The stunning claim was made during a White House briefing following a meeting between Trump and his National Security Council over Russian actions.

Russian Federation and China are out to embarrass the United States and prove that democracy and capitalism will fail, Rep. Chris Stewart said Thursday. "We discussed everything. We got along really well".

Right before the briefing began, the White House released a letter Bolton sent to Senate Democrats about election interference.

"The threat is multi-disciplinary: targeting United States officials and other USA persons through traditional intelligence tradecraft, criminal efforts to suppress voting and provide illegal campaign financing, cyber-attacks against voting infrastructure along with computer intrusions".

Stewart, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said he's often asked what he sees as the biggest threats to the U.S. Quoting a now retired military commander, he said Russian Federation is the only existential threat, North Korea is the most unsafe and China is the most complicated.

"This is about exploiting the fault lines that exist in our society and building on what was done in 2016, and it isn't confined to the internet - it includes print and television, as well, in some cases using existing platforms that predate the 2016 election", the official said.

But this is a blatant lie, and we know Trump knows it's a lie.
