So, in the hope of stabilizing that fraught dynamic, Russian Federation has appointed a special representative dedicated to improving Russia-U.S. relations, working in the "humanitarian sphere" and "in the sphere of culture, public and youth exchanges".

In 2014, Seagal posted a statement on his website to clarify that he had been misquoted by media outlets saying he called Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, the world's greatest leader.

Actor Steven Seagal on Sunday embraced his new role as a "special representative" of the Russian Foreign Ministry, saying he takes the role "very seriously".

Now the American actor Steven Seagal, 66, is to take on a subtler role, as a humanitarian envoy for Russian Federation.

The unpaid position will be similar to a United Nations goodwill ambassador's role, the foreign ministry said.

Relations between the two countries have been fraught as US intelligence agencies have accused Russian Federation of interfering in the 2016 elections and have warned it could do so again in the November contests.

The actor, who became a Russian citizen in 2016, shared the news on his Twitter. Both countries are at odds over Syria and Ukraine and there is still the issue of Russian hackers tampering with the 2016 elections in an effort to further divide the United States.

Seagal won't be receiving any payment for doing the job, which the ministry described as "the case of people's diplomacy meeting with traditional diplomacy".

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on the appointment of Mr. Seagal on August 4.

"I've always tried to do everything possible to help Russian-American relations to improve", Seagal, who hold both Russian and USA passports, said to TASS news agency.

For more than a decade Seagal, who according to his own website is 66, has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation.

President Putin is also a fan of the kind of martial arts that Seagal often practiced in his Hollywood action movies.
