Manchester United's Jose Mourinho changes course and won't criticise individual players

Souness had earlier criticised Mourinho after the Portuguese boss claimed Manchester City lacked class with their documentary on their 2017/18 title-winning campaign.

United were woeful as they fell to a 3-2 loss at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, a scoreline that flattered Mourinho's side.

Paul Pogba's penalty in second-half stoppage time was too little, too late for disjointed United.

"The attitude we had was not like we wanted to beat them, they had more hunger than us".

"I think we made the mistake we shouldn't make".

'He can find that stability that makes the great players, we try, we try to help him and he's working well'. Different teams, different tactics.

"Today the situation was not even a corner but was similar in the sense we had one last ball and the referee stopped the game when the ball was in the air". We know Antony well and you can expect always good things from him. Not a single Man United player covered himself in glory.

This confirmation of captaincy puts to bed speculation that United could install Pogba as the first-choice captain this season after his debut in the armband last weekend. "We did it for ourselves", said Guardiola.

With the transfer window now shut, Mourinho will have to stick with this current crop, but he could well be ruing not trying to sign Harry Maguire in the summer, as this current United defence - or the one that played today - is not up to the job, and change is needed.

United's defending was dire, with Bailly and Victor Lindelof doing little to convince the manager of their suitability as a long-term partnership, while Andreas Pereira and new recruit Fred were anonymous in midfield. Sometimes you make mistakes and are punished, sometimes the opponent doesn't take advantage of the gifts, and sometimes they do and this time was nearly three on three so they were critical in the gifts that we gave them and because of that I think they deserve [to win].

"In the continuity of this, with no Antonio (Valencia) in the team, he was the captain and for the next match I don't think Antonio's going to play, so he'll be the captain again".
