IDF reports 202 attacks on Iranian targets in Syria

A total of 202 strikes were carried out in neighbouring Syria, the official said, all of which involved "military targets, majority belonging to the (Iranian) Revolutionary Guards".

In the hours after the Israel Defence Forces' acknowledgement of attacks on Tuesday, Syria's official state-run SANA news agency reported that its military Defence systems intercepted several Israeli missiles, but also said that Israeli missiles struck several military targets in Tartous and Hama, killing one and injuring four.

The rationale behind specific Israeli strikes in Syria is often unclear, and officials rarely admit to specific strikes, let alone why they were carried out. His statement was later confirmed by a military spokeswoman.

The revelation about IDF missions in Syria came just hours after Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman stressed that the Jewish state would act to counter all Iranian threats "no matter where [they] come from".

Foreign sources attributed this and a number of other attacks in Syria to Israel.

Once willing to consider returning the Golan for peace with Syria, the Israelis have argued in recent years that the civil war in Syria and the presence there of an Iranian garrison backing Damascus show they need to keep it.

Israel's strikes on Syria have been largely ignored by Russia, Syria's big power backer.

Reuters reported over the weekend that Iran has been transferring missiles to Shia proxies in Iraq over the past few months and that it is building missile manufacturing facilities in Iraq and Syria.

Interviewed by Reuters last month, Bolton said: "Obviously we understand the Israeli claim that it has annexed the Golan Heights - we understand their position - but there's no change in the USA position for now".
