On two separate occasions this month (Sept. 1 and September 6), the Russian military warned its American counterparts of its intension to conduct a military operation in southern Syria near the At Tanf garrison where us special operations forces are located.
Al Tanf is home to a U.S military outpost where USA forces train local anti-ISIS partners.

Syrian state media and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that pro-government forces focused their shelling overnight and on Wednesday on the western and southern edges of the rebel enclave. Both have said they have a hotline to avoid direct conflict.
Citing several unnamed USA defense officials, CNN reported Thursday that Russian Federation warned the us military twice in the last week that its forces and Syrian regime units are prepared to attack militants near al Tanf.
Twice the US military has told the Russians to back off. The United Nations has said displaced people already make up about half of the 3 million people living in rebel-held areas of the northwest.
That was followed by a letter sent Thursday to Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, the commander of US forces in Syria, warning that Russian Federation planned to carry out "precision strikes" near Tanf against Islamic State fighters, a warning that prompted Funk to speed up plans to dispatch additional troops to the base.
USA officials, however, are stopping short of discussing what military weapons and measures are in place for the protection of USA troops.

On Friday, for example, the presidents of Iran, Russia, and Turkey, all of whom have fighters in Syria, held a summit in Tehran to plot their next moves.
That was followed Thursday, Brown said, by an unprecedented written note to Funk from his Russian counterpart "that they would make precision strikes".
"In case the armed terrorist groups refuse to lay down weapons, refuse to leave Syrian territory to go back to where they came from, the Syrian government is prepared", Jaafari said.
Asked if he saw indications of the Syrian government preparing to use chemical weapons in Idlib, Mattis said, " I think the best answer to that is, we are very alert".
United States officials would not say how Moscow conveyed its warning to Washington.
The US warned Russian Federation that it would defend itself if attacked.
US President Donald Trump has warned Syria's President Assad and his allies Iran and Russian Federation not to launch a "reckless attack" to the Idlib province, as it would result in hundreds of thousands of people killed. The Russian government denied any role in the attack.
