Syria Accidentally Shot Down a Russian Military Plane, Killing 15

Russian Federation has generally turned a blind eye to Israeli attacks on Iranian forces in Syria and the two countries' militaries maintain a hotline to avoid mistakes.

Asked about the Defense Ministry's threat to respond to Israel's actions, Putin said the Russian response will focus on boosting security for its troops in Syria.

While trust between the Russian and Israeli military will suffer as a result, the two countries "have a lot of common interests, especially in Syria", said Andrei Kortunov, head of the Russian International Affairs Council, a research group set up by the Kremlin.

An Israeli diplomatic source told Reuters that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin "shortly".

In a statement on Tuesday, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it holds Syria, Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah responsible for the incident, in which 15 Russian crew members were killed.

The Russian military claimed Israeli pilots had attacked Syrian targets by using "the Russian plane as a cover, exposing it to fire from Syrian air defences".

Russian Federation is supporting President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war.

It said the initial Israeli inquiry into the incident found that "extensive and inaccurate" Syrian surface-to-air anti-aircraft fire "caused the Russian plane to be hit and downed".

The defence ministry in Moscow said the aircraft was returning to the Russian-run Hmeymim airbase in Latakia province when, at about 11:00 p.m. Moscow time (20:00 GMT) on Monday, it disappeared from radar screens. "Nevertheless, they deliberately carried out this provocation".

Israel traditionally refrains from taking official responsibility for airstrikes outside the Palestinian arena, although news media reports have credited Israel with hundreds of strikes in Syria in recent years.

Syria has accidentally downed a Russian Ilyushin military aircraft, like this one, killing all 15 crew onboard when its air defences went into action against an alleged Israeli missile strike, the Russian army says.

Russian Federation said it was given less than a minute's warning by Israel ahead of the strikes, which was not enough time to get the military surveillance plane out of the way.

The Russian maritime patrol plane lost signal and is believed to have been shot down during an alleged Israeli missile attack in the province of Latakia. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said in a statement. Israeli military officials have previously praised its effectiveness. "These will be the steps that everyone will notice", he said, without providing further details.

Russian Federation has frequently boasted about its air defenses in Syria and their ability to repel attacks from even top-of-the-line United States stealth jets.

Syrian air defenses sprang to life during the attack, but it's unclear if they shot down anything besides the Russian Il-20.

Russian Federation has not yet officially directed blame towards Israel for the attack. In some cases, those countries are backing opposing sides in the Syrian conflict.
