Harvard Professor Gita Gopinath Appointed Chief Economist at International Monetary Fund

Gopinath, who is a United States citizen, now serves as a professor at the Harvard University. She will succeed Maurice Obstfeld who has announced his retirement at the end of 2018.

In 2014, she was named as one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the International Monetary Fund and in 2016 she received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Washington.

Gopinath is co-editor of the American Economic Review and co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics Program at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).

Gopinath co-edited the current Handbook of International Economics with Former IMF Economic Counsellor Kenneth Rogoff and has authored some 40 research articles on exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt, and emerging market crises.

The appointed has been done by IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

Gita completed her Bachelor's in Economics from Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi.

Gita Gopinath pursued her PhD in Economics from Princeton University in 2001 following Masters in Arts (MA) degrees from both the Delhi School of Economics and University of Washington. She joined the University of Chicago in 2001 as an Assistant Professor before moving to Harvard in 2005. She became a tenured Professor there in 2010. She also serves as the financial adviser to the chief minister of Kerala. Having authored more than 40 research articles on a wide range of topics such as exchange rates, trade and investment, global financial crisis, monetary policy, debt and emerging market crisis, Gopinath has shouldered the position as the managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies.
