Tennessee State LB Christion Abercrombie taken to hospital for emergency surgery

Tennessee State linebacker Christion Abercrombie is in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery for a head injury during a game against Vanderbilt on Saturday.

"The last I heard he was in surgery; we've been praying for him", TSU coach Rod Reed said after the game.

Reed told WNSR that there was no change in Abercrombie's status overnight.

"He came to the sideline and just kind of collapsed there, " Reed said, The Boston Globe reported.

Abercrombie, a transfer to the Nashville school from IL, was given oxygen by trainers and was taken off on a stretcher.

As a sophomore transfer from Illinois, Abercrombie entered Saturday's game with 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Vanderbilt's football team also tweeted about the football star. He came into today's game as the Tigers' second-leading tackler and was credited with five tackles and a quarterback hurry before being injured.

"At the end of the day, I'm a football coach coaching a team and coaching a game, but football's what we do, not who we are", Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason said.

"That's who Mase is; he's a class guy", Reed said. "I know what it is to be a coach. At the end of the day, when serious injuries happen, football becomes secondary".

'Our thoughts are with the Abercrombie family, their friends and the entire Tennessee State community during this hard time, ' the tweet read. "I'm going to leave here and go there to see about him".
