Steven Wright Officially Removed From ALDS Roster, Replaced By Heath Hembree

The Red Sox replaced Wright with reliever Heath Hembree for the ALDS.

The Boston Red Sox lost an important part of their bullpen Saturday. Still, the team's recent configurations hint slightly at a deep unease, with the club calling upon rotation lynchpin Rick Porcello in the 7th inning of last night's 5-4 win, and stationing highly effective third starter Eduardo Rodriguez in the corps for an indefinite period.

Wright was 2-0 with a 1.52 ERA and a 1.213 WHIP this year. The inflammation was likely an offshoot of the cartilage restoration surgery he underwent in May 2017, and this appears to be a similar recurrence.

Wright, who has made appearance as a starter and reliever, will reportedly see a knee specialist when the team arrives in NY.

A replacement for Wright has not yet been announced, though Drellich speculates that rookie left-hander Bobby Poyner or right-hander Heath Hembree might sub in for the veteran righty for the remainder of the series. Assuming everything checks out with his knee, Wright would still be eligible to return to the Red Sox' bullpen in the World Series, should the team advance that far past the Yankees, Astros, and Indians over the next couple of weeks.
