The latest incident in the South China Sea comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing, and the situation could soon worsen, as the U.S. military is reportedly considering a proposal for a major show of force as a warning to the Chinese, which perceive American actions moves to contain Chinese power.

US Navy's Pacific Fleet's draft has proposed that a series of operations should be conducted in a single week in November, CNN reported quoting several US defence officials.

The White House responded publicly Thursday to a heated confrontation between the Chinese navy and a USA destroyer in the South China Sea this past weekend.

That came after the USA penalized China over the alleged purchase by Beijing of Russian combat aircraft and surface-to-air missiles, which it the US said was a violation of US sanctions.

Relations between the USA and China have deteriorated over an escalating trade dispute. "A Chinese naval vessel came within 45 yards of the USS Decatur as it conducted freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea, forcing our ship to quickly maneuver to avoid collision".

Speaking on behalf of the White House, he held up the recent clash between U.S. and Chinese warships in the South China Sea as an example of Chinese "aggression".

The United States and China are embroiled in a trade war, sparked by Trump's accusations that China has long sought to steal USA intellectual property, limit access to its own market and unfairly subsidise state-owned companies.

"As the Secretary of Defence has said on countless occasions, we don't comment on future operations of any kind", said Lt. Col. David Eastburn, a Pentagon spokesman.

The U.S. navy proposal focuses on operations in the Pacific, but the CNN report said they could stretch as far as the western coast of South America, where China is expanding investments and diplomatic relationships. If the initial proposal goes off well, then it could be expanded up to Russian Federation, according to CNN.

"There is less positive "ballast" in the relationship now than at any other time since 1989, and probably much earlier", Lowy Institute senior fellow Euan Graham said. "Adversarial behavior, on both sides, will increasingly characterize that".
