#MeToo effect: Minister of "External affairs" MJ Akbar resigned

Following allegations of sexual assault by women journalists who worked with him when he was an editor, Akbar has filed a defamation case in a Delhi Court against one of those women journalists. "I have, therefore, tendered my resignation from the office of Minister of State for External Affairs".

Mr Akbar expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for giving him the opportunity to serve the country.

Ramani had recently taken to Twitter to recall a blog she had written in 2017 about her harassment by a senior journalist some 20 years ago, but had not named Akbar in the article. "I look forward to the day when I will also get justice in court #metoo". "We would request the honourable court hearing the defamation case to also consider the testimonies of sexual harassment of some of us at the hands of the petitioner, as also of the other signatories who bore witness to this harassment", the journalists said in the joint statement undersigned by them.

More than a dozen women journalists have come out to accuse Akbar of harassment. Highly-placed sources who did not wish to be identified, however, said the decision "came from the very top" and "the extent of the allegations and Akbar's own aggressive reaction made the party high command believe this was getting untenable".

In his complaint, Akbar has stated that Ramani "resorted to a series of maliciously fabricated allegations, which she is diabolically and viciously spreading using media, it is also apparent that false narrative against the Complainant is being circulated in a motivated manner and for the fulfillment of an agenda".
