Novak Djokovic defeats Borna Coric to win Shanghai Masters crown

Success keeps coming for Novak Djokovic, who continues what has to be one of, if not the most drastic turn-around seasons in Open Era history. This was backed up on the court by winning the title without conceding a set en route.

That was the warning shot fired by the "new" Novak Djokovic after the Serb, who displaces Swiss Roger Federer as world No. 2 today, lifted his fourth Shanghai Masters title with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Croatia's Borna Coric.

A forehand volley error from Coric gifted Djokovic the opening game of the second set, but the Croatian did well to save four break points in the third game that lasted 11 minutes. Not many holes in the game in general, especially this week.

He is now 35 points behind Nadal, who is struggling to come off the sidelines after suffering a knee injury at the US Open.

Yastremska started the second set in much the same style, immediately breaking Wang with a forehand victor.

"I couldn't ask for a better scenario". Emotionally they helped me a lot when I had the surgery.

After the successful tour in Shanghai, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer to become World No. 2 on Monday and is getting very close to Rafael Nadal's number one spot.

"I thought I was actually playing really well", said Coric. I think since I was a kid I was always paying attention to the practice court. I was not serving particularly well, but that's also because I think he was returning extremely well. There are times when it's tough, I want to sleep in a little bit or I want to go out a little bit, but it's not very often.

"I'm just happy with the whole week".

Coric was playing in his first final at a Masters 1000 tournament and his inexperience on the big stage told as Djokovic quickly stamped his authority on the match.

"It's awesome. I need to take only positives from this week".

Djokovic said he could play Vienna or Basel, the week before Paris, in an effort to further rein in his rankings rival.

Novak Djokovic continued his resurgence with the Shanghai Masters title.

The 31-year-old Serbian needed one hour and 36 minutes to beat Coric, now world No. 19, who reached the final after beating the defending champion, Roger Federer of Switzerland, who in turn will fall to world No. 3 when the ATP rankings are released on Monday.
