The report of Bulger's death came about an hour after the WVNews website reported that a prisoner was slain overnight inside the Hazleton federal penitentiary in Bruceton Mills.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons online inmate log on Tuesday listed Bulger as an inmate at USP Hazelton, a high-security prison with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp in Bruceton Mills.

In 2016, auctioned items seized from Bulger's Santa Monica, California, apartment raised nearly $110,000 to compensate victims' families. A person familiar with his move told the Boston Globe that Bulger's health was deteriorating. He was recently moved from a prison in Florida and had a stop in Oklahoma City before arriving in West Virginia. Weadick was convicted in June 2018 of the 1993 murder of Steven DiSarro, a South Boston business owner. Bulger's one-time henchman, Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi, testified during Weadick's trial that he had walked in on Weadick killing DiSarro, but hastily left.
