They victims - three women and eight men, all from Pittsburgh and the city's suburbs - ranged in age from 54 to 97, and included two brothers and one married couple.

"After hard work by the medical examiner's office, all 11 victims were positively identified and next of kin notifications took place", Robert Jones, the FBI agent in charge of the investigation, said at an early-morning press briefing.

Brothers Cecil and David Rosenthal usually attended services. The oldest was 97 years old, and the youngest 54.

"The loss is incalculable", said Stephen Cohen, co-president of New Light Congregation, which rents space at Tree of Life.

Myron Snider, a friend of Wax, a retired accountant, described his friend to The Associated Press as "such a kind, kind person".

Court papers say Bowers made statements about genocide and killing Jewish people. Bowers was hospitalized in fair condition with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Robert Bowers, a 46-year-old Pittsburgh resident, was identified as the shooter. "Three of these fearless men were shot by Bowers", Brady said at a press conference.

Federal prosecutors charged Bowers late on Saturday with 29 criminal counts including violating US civil rights laws.

Robert Jones, FBI special agent in charge, said authorities conducted a search of Mr. Bowers' home in Baldwin, Pennsylvania, and his vehicle. German Chancellor Angela Merkel denounced the act of "blind anti-Semitic hatred".

President Donald Trump, speaking at a campaign rally in IL late Saturday, solemnly denounced the attack, saying: "The scourge of anti-Semitism can not be ignored, can not be tolerated and can not be allowed to continue".

Pope Francis, at the end of the Angelus prayer in Saint Peter's Square, expressed his sadness at the violence.

"After a raging anti-Semite shot up a holy place of worship on our Shabbat and murdered our extended Pittsburgh Jewish family, we needed to be here because in times like these we need community", said Jeff Finkelstein, CEO of Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh. He prayed "to help us to extinguish the flames of hatred that develop in our societies".

PayPal banned social network on Saturday, following reports that the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting had published a number of anti-Semitic posts on the site, which is popular with conservatives and the white nationalist "alt-right".

Howard Elson, a former president at Tree of Life, recalled to The Washington Post how the two brothers would serve as honorary chairs during the synagogue's services for disabled adults.

Then "police officers and SWAT teams responded quickly to the scene, and Bowers shot at them", Mr. Brady said.

Bowers is charged with 11 counts of criminal homicide, six counts of aggravated assault and 13 counts of ethnic intimidation.

Saturday's mass shooting began just before 10 a.m.

The suspected gunman who killed 11 worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue in the most deadly attack ever on the Jewish community in the United States likely acted alone, officials said yesterday.

Instead, authorities say, Bowers exchanged gunfire with the two officers, shooting one in the hand; the other was injured by shrapnel.

Bowers faces 29 federal counts, including weapons offenses and hate crimes.

Bowers shot his victims with an AR-15 - the weapon used in numerous nation's mass shootings - and three handguns, all of which he owned legally and had a license to carry, according to a law enforcement official who wasn't authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation, and spoke Sunday on condition of anonymity.
