Amazon in 'advanced talks' to build new headquarters near DC

Ralph Northam didn't offer any hints when he was asked on WTOP's Ask the Governor about published reports that say Amazon is focusing in on Crystal City in Arlington.

Amazon is reportedly in advanced talks with officials in Northern Virginia about the possibility of opening its second headquarters in Crystal City. Company founder and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos already had several connections to the Washington area.

Amazon said that it's second headquarters would employ 50,000 people and comprise a $5 billion dollar investment in the location that it chooses.

The talks come after a year-long search that left hundreds of cities around the country scrambling to pitch themselves to the e-commerce giant, according to The Washington Post.

Amazon announced past year that the retail giant was looking to open a second headquarters somewhere in North America, bringing with it as many as 50,000 new jobs. When the company announced a list of 20 top contenders in January, it included both Washington as well as Montgomery County, Maryland, which is just north of D.C.

Toronto was the only Canadian city to make Amazon's shortlist for hosting its headquarters, but, if the Washington Post report is correct, it looks like hopes from Canada's largest city have been dashed.

At a conference in NY on Thursday, CEO Jeff Bezos - who said in October that Amazon will decide before the end of the year where HQ2 will be - told attendees the decision would ultimately be based on his intuition.
