With some 80 percent of precincts reporting, Ocasio-Cortez has earned 79 percent of the vote, far outpacing the 13 percent going to her Republican rival.

16 women nominated for Governor (of the 36 states electing one today). "We can do better because a better world is possible".

"There is nothing inherently noble about protecting a status quo that does not serve the needs of working-class Americans, " Ocasio-Cortez said.

After Trump's victory, she chose to embark on a road trip to gain "first-person idea of what was going on" in America.

She is a Democratic-Socialist who served on the state legislature from 2009 to 2014 and ran her congressional primary campaign supporting Medicare for all, a $15 minimum wage and abolishing Ice.

"This is not an end, this is the beginning".

Ocasio-Cortez caught the eye of potential voters last spring after her campaign video went viral, racking up 300,000 views on its first day.

She said in June: "It's really scary or it's easy to generate fear around an idea or around an -ism when you don't provide any substance to it".

"I believe that every American should have stable, dignified housing; health care; education - that the most very basic needs to sustain modern life should be guaranteed in a moral society".

Prior to learning of her victory, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, thanking her supporters.

Women have run in record numbers, and Native Americans, Muslims, Latinos, immigrants, millennials and LGBT candidates have already made history with their campaigns.

Tuesday night's elections saw an influx of diversity "firsts" in the House of Representatives, ushered in by the record-breaking candidacies of women - specifically women of color - on the Democratic ticket. About 6 in 10 voted for the Democrat in the race, compared with 4 in 10 for the Republican candidate. White men with college degrees, meanwhile, were evenly split, and whites without degrees voted strongly Republican, according to CNN's exit polls. Nuñez, "when she takes office, will be the highest ranking Hispanic female in the history of the state of Florida", DeSantis said during his victory speech on Tuesday night.
