Trump faces investigation blitz from Democratic House of Representatives

"Now you don't have to worry if you're going to call me congressman or congresswoman or congress lady", Blackburn said in her victory speech.

"The president is best when he is on the road talking directly to the American people, and I think last night's results demonstrate that", says Trump's former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is hailing "a new day in America". They talked on election night about doing an infrastructure package and lowering health care costs, particularly around prescription drugs, priorities for both sides. But the president warned that he will respond in kind and the government will suffer.

Two other key Democratic lawmakers, Elijah Cummings of Maryland, who will nearly certainly head the House Oversight Committee, and Adam Schiff of the Intelligence Committee, have both called for new oversight of Trump and his administration, probes often blocked by majority Republicans in the past two years.

"Cory, everybody in this room is ready to get on board and make sure that happens", Menendez, also a Democrat, said.

Early on Wednesday, Mr Trump added: "Now we can all get back to work and get things done!"

"I could fire everybody right now, but I don't want to stop it because politically I don't like stopping it", Trump said, calling the probe a "hoax" and a "disgrace". "Yesterday was such a very Big Win, and all under the pressure of a Nasty and Hostile Media!"

"When you report fake news - which CNN does a lot - you are the enemy of the people", said Mr. Trump. Both said they will seek the job of minority leader.

In ill-tempered exchanges, he called a CNN correspondent "a rude, bad person" and told an NBC reporter: "I'm not a big fan of yours either". Trump said he was moving on, and the reporter actually refused to give up the microphone when an aide tried to take it.

Trump's Republicans lost the House of Representatives in Tuesday's vote but increased their majority in the Senate. The Arizona Senate race is too close to call and Democrats won all the important races in Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada.

Elijah Cummings, now the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, also has a wish list of probes, including Mr Trump's apparent interference in a plan to build a new headquarters for the Federal Bureau of Investigation; drug pricing under the Trump administration; and the mishandling of the deadly 2017 hurricane disaster in Puerto Rico.

But the olive branch he extended was studded with thorns as he declared that he would retaliate if Democrats use their control of the House to issue subpoenas to seek his tax returns and investigate his business dealings, his Cabinet's conduct and his campaign's ties to Russian Federation, as expected.

The president also suggested that, somehow, losing a House majority could be beneficial to his agenda because Democrats will want to work with him. "And if it becomes clear that this is another move to shut down the Mueller investigation, then that is something that we'll have to seriously consider". As this was the region that was seen as one which gave Trump the presidency, the deep rejection of the GOP there has to be seen as a unsafe development for the president. Additionally, in 2014, Obama lost the Senate. Today, his chances for re-election look much more hard than they did just a few months ago.

Almost 40 per cent of voters cast their ballots to express opposition to the president, according to AP VoteCast, the national survey of the electorate, while one-in-four said they voted to express support for Trump. Its members effectively will be able to block all legislation that the Senate passes and the president wants.

"We have the beginning of a new Democratic Party, younger, browner, cooler, more women, more veterans, can win in MI, can win in Pennsylvania, can win in OH", said Van Jones, a CNN political commentator.

Internal Revenue Service law allows House and Senate tax-writing committees to request federal returns, and the ranking Ways and Means Democrat, Rep. Richard Neal of MA, has signaled publicly he would ask for them - a move the White House might fight.
