Arsenal boss Unai Emery believes Danny Welbeck's injury affected his players

This is the worst news. "We think [they are] serious injuries".

"We worked well with very good commitment in a hard game". He's helped us with his behaviour, with his quality and his capacity.

"When one player has an injury like that, every player on the pitch they look at this injury".

"The objective is for him to come back to us and grow up with us after this experience".

But when the match finishes, the first thing they did was ask for him.

Another Arsenal win would take them to 12 points to mean Lisbon would not overtake them - even if the Emery's side lost their last two group games thanks to their better head-to-head record.

But it was Welbeck's injury just before the half hour mark that was the main talking point from a largely forgettable Emirates Stadium encounter.

The 27-year-old has overcome serious issues in the past, missing large chunks of his career with knee problems.

The home side started positively enough with Matteo Guendouzi getting in behind the visitors backline to send a low ball in, but Welbeck's flick was hacked off the line.

Welbeck required oxygen and had to be stretchered off the field after landing awkwardly on his ankle after he contested a header in Sporting's box.

But Arsenal could not take advantage as Aubameyang blasted the resulting free-kick well over the crossbar.

Following the match, which finished scoreless, Unai Emery confirmed that the forward had been sent to the hospital.
