Bourke Street incident: Man shot by police after stabbing and auto fire


A man has been arrested after setting a auto on fire and stabbing three people - one fatally - in central Melbourne, Australia.

Terrifying footage has emerged of the moment a man lunged at police with a knife in Melbourne's Bourke Street on Friday afternoon.

Victoria Police said officers responded to reports of a vehicle fire before they were confronted by the man.

Paramedics said they assessed three people at the scene, one with a neck injury: "They are in a suspected critical condition".

They say there is no known link to terrorism at this stage but are "keeping an open mind".

Victoria Police said a bomb response unit had been called to the area and was now making the scene safe. "A third person has also been taken to hospital". "The area has been cordoned off", police said.

The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

Counter-terror officers have swooped on the scene.

Police are urging people to avoid Swanston Street and Bourke Street.

"He seemed to be waving something, people around me screamed that he had a knife, but I couldn't see clearly from where I was", a witness told ABC News.

Melbourne resident Meegan May tweeted: "Chaos in Bourkest as a guy seems to have set his auto on fire then attacking police with a knife". Police response was swift and overwhelming.

"Police are now at an incident on Bourke St in the CBD". Fully engulfed. Multiple loud bangs."This incident in Bourke Street comes on the second day of the highly-publicised murder trial of James Gargasoulas, who allegedly drove through Bourke Street Mall on January 20, 2017, killing six people and injuring 27 others".
