Elon Musk readies Starship for interplanetary trip

SpaceX's Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), a fully reusable vehicle created to take humans and supplies to Mars and also to dramatically cut travel time within Earth, is getting a new name, Starship, the company's CEO Elon Musk has announced.

Mr Musk had previously named his Mars spaceship the Mars Colonial Transporter (MCT), then the Interplanetary Transport System (ITS), then the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR), and is now calling it simply Starship.

The SpaceX founder announced his decision to rename the BFR to Starship on Twitter late Monday. Since the former BFR was made in two stages, he also did the same for the new name. The rocket booster that will help it "escape Earth's deep gravity well" will be called Super Heavy. Rather, later versions of SpaceX spacecraft will be.

The BFR was envisioned as SpaceX's vehicle for bringing humanity to Mars. They've even enlisted Japanese billionaire entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa as its first private citizen passenger.

This two-stage vehicle - composed of a Booster and a Ship - is created to eventually replace the company's Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy and the Dragon spacecraft.
