Wells, who has coached the Aggies since 2013 and was a former Utah State quarterback, is departing his alma mater for a Power Five opportunity in the Big 12.

"Quickly in the interview process, it became clear Matt Wells and his leadership style were a flawless fit to lead our football program", Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt said.

Utah State head coach Matt Wells is the current front-runner for Texas Tech's head coaching job, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Don Williams.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders appear to be closing in on their replacement for recently-ousted head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Wells was named the Mountain West Conference coach of the year this season following a 10-2 run and had the Aggies ranked in the top-25 prior to last week's loss to Boise State. He has a 44-34 overall record in six seasons as head coach.

The Aggies have scored at least 50 points 14 times and 60-plus points six times - both school records - under Wells this season.

Utah State has also been strong defensively in 2018. Multiple reports have surfaced that he will become the next offensive coordinator at USC after the Trojans fired Tee Martin earlier this week.

Texas Tech made the announcement after holding a team meeting to inform the players of Wells' hiring.

ESPN's Jake Trotter also reported that Wells is expected to bring offensive coordinator David Yost and defensive coordinator Keith Patterson with him from Utah State.

Texas Tech fired Mike Leach in 2009 after ten seasons and neither of its next two hires have caught on for the long haul.
