Former major league infielders Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were killed in a vehicle crash Thursday in Venezuela, where they were playing for a winter league team.

The Orange County Register says the auto they were in reportedly hit a rock on the road in the state of Yarucuy.

"We are saddened by the tragic news that Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer Jose Castillo have died in a auto accident", the organization tweeted.

Valbuena, an infielder, played for five Major League Baseball clubs, most recently the Angels in 2017 and 2018.

Yet Luis Valbuena remained a player that fans in Chicago remembered as he continued his career elsewhere in Major League Baseball. In an 11-year major league career, he batted.226 with a.310 on-base percentage, a.394 slugging percentage, 114 homers and 367 RBIs in 1,011 games.

Castillo played five seasons with Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Houston. Rivero played for the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies and Washington Nationals before signing with the Boston Red Sox in December 2013. He recorded a.254 batting average with 39 home runs and 218 RBI during his career. He collected four hits in seven at-bats (.571 average) while hitting a home run and driving in three runs.
