Residents of Morab village in Dharwad, located 30 km from the city centre, are now on a draining task. They have lowered pipes to empty the Jagirdar's Lake in the village, which is the only source of drinking water for its people. Residents in Morab village of Dharwad district feared that the lake, which is their main source of drinking water in the drought-affected area, has been infected with the virus, Reuters reported. Word immediately spread that the water has been contaminated, creating panic among villagers.

Water from the sprawling lake will be pumped out on Wednesday night or the following morning, after which it will be cleaned and then filled with water from Malaprabha canal by December 20. Morab Lake is the biggest in the Navalgund Taluk in north Karnataka and the only source of drinking water.

Nagaraj Bidralli, a local official, tried to dissuade residents of the village from the idea, explaining that the virus they were so afraid of can't survive in water.

Locals used to draw water from the lake. The villagers, however, remained unconvinced, leading to the lake water being drained. "The water in the lake is being cleared and will be emptied in a couple of days. We still have to drain water from 60% of the lake and need at least five days to empty it", he said. People in the village knew that she was HIV positive.
