"This trade bolsters our player development system with the additions of Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn, while also providing immediate impact to our major league club", Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto said in a statement.

MLB.com slotted Kelenic as the No. 2 prospect in Seattle's system and Dunn at No. 3.

Breaking this deal down, the Mets will receive Cano, Diaz and $20 million to cover part of Cano's contract, while the Mariners will acquire outfielder Jay Bruce, reliever Anthony Swarzak, outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic, and pitching prospects Justin Dunn and Gerson Bautista.

"As I stood in front of you a few weeks ago, I stated that this organization meant to be relentless and fearless in our pursuit of greatness", Van Wagenen said. "And it is that conviction that led us to this moment".

"We have a winning mindset, and collectively we believe that everything is possible and nothing is impossible".

Van Wagenen chalked up parting ways with Kelenic and Dunn as the price of doing business while in win-now mode.

"I'm more than happy - I would say blessed - to be able to wear this uniform", said Cano, an eight-time All-Star who excelled for nine seasons with the Yankees before signing a 10-year, $240 million free-agent contract with the Mariners prior to the 2014 season.

According to Joel Sherman of New York Post, the deal has been finalized and made official.

Cano served an 80-game suspension this year following a positive test for Furosemide, a diuretic that can be used to mask performance-enhancing drugs.

He hit.303 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs in 80 games.

For his career, Cano owns a.304 batting average with 311 home runs in 14 seasons.

"The opportunity to go fill two primary needs that we laid out at the start of the offseason was paramount in trying to get this deal done, and we were willing to make those sacrifices", he said.

"For me, first of all, this organization was across the street (from the Yankees) so I know", Cano said. "I'm happy to be back in NY".

Said Van Wagnen: "Robinson Cano is one of the best second basemen in the history of the game".

Diaz had a 1.96 ERA and struck out 124 in 73⅓ innings. The 24-year-old Puerto Rican right-hander was selected to his first All-Star Game in 2018.

"To Mets fans, we came here to win and try to reach the World Series and get that ring", Diaz told reporters, according to the New York Post.

Van Wagenen called Diaz "the best closer in the game today".

Mets fans now have some new toys for the holidays.
