Trump to pick State Dept spokeswoman Heather Nauert as United Nations envoy

Read on for three things to know about Nauert.

Nauert's nomination, which had been widely expected, was confirmed by Trump on December 7.

"I've known Heather for many years".

Mr Trump earlier said his daughter, Ivanka, would be flawless for the role but conceded he'd be accused of nepotism if he appointed her.

"I'm sure she will perform well at her hearing and look forward to supporting her nomination".

Outgoing UN Ambassador Nikki Haley announced her shock resignation in October, after holding the post for 18 months. The first ambassador to the serve in a presidential Cabinet was actually Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., under Eisenhower. She also would be going up against foreign counterparts like the United Nations representatives from Russian Federation and China, who each have decades of experience in diplomacy.

"When you talk about Germany, we have a very strong relationship with the Government of Germany", Nauert said, and mentioned the anniversary of the post-World War II Marshall Plan. "Haley has done representing your administration and the American people". Haley had lobbied hard to get the resolution passed, but couldn't garner the two-thirds majority needed.

Heather Nauert, who has shown poise in front of the cameras and mostly avoided gaffes, would succeed Nikki Haley, a former SC governor seen as entertaining ambitions for higher political office. She is a quick study.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who will take over as chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee next year, said in a statement that Barr was "highly capable, highly respected and will provide new and much-needed leadership for the Department of Justice". "Haley had a lot of autonomy, with Tillerson largely absent, she had the ambition and leeway to drive U.S. policy".

During Nauert's tenure at the state department, press briefings went from being daily events to being held once or twice weekly. "I have great confidence in her".

According to Daniel Benjamin, a state department counterterrorism coordinator during the Barack Obama administration, Nauert's appointment shows that Trump and his top officials are looking to firmly control USA foreign policy. Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the UN, may want a more junior person in the role so as to de-emphasize the importance of the relationship between the United States and the United Nations. It has also sought to reduce funding for United Nations peacekeeping operations.

After her appointment as acting undersecretary, she was for a time the highest-ranking woman and fourth highest-ranking official at State.

That's half-right. The position was indeed reduced to sub-Cabinet rank during the George W. Bush administration and restored to Cabinet rank by Obama.

Haley is the first Indian-American to ever appointed to a Cabinet position in any United States presidential administration.

While the former Fox News anchor struggled under former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who kept her blocked out of his inner circle, Nauert built a rapport with current Secretary Michael Pompeo, who came to trust her as a reliable voice and advocate for Trump's agenda.
