Liberty University Hires Former Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze

Liberty has hired former MS coach Hugh Freeze to lead its football program.

More than that, however, after leaving MS in 2017 amid controversy, his arrival at the private, Christian school signifies something of a new beginning. He led Ole Miss to a 39-25 mark with four bowl game appearances during his five seasons there.

Freeze resigned from Ole Miss in July 2017 in the wake of what the school termed "a pattern of personal misconduct inconsistent with the standards we expect from the leader of our football team".

Former Ole Miss head football coach Hugh Freeze has officially been introduced as the football coach at Liberty University.

"We are proud to welcome Hugh Freeze and his family to Liberty University", said Liberty President Jerry Falwell. The calls from his school-furnished cell phone began as early as 2012, an investigation revealed. The NCAA allegations also accused Freeze of failing to monitor his coaching staff. Recruiting restrictions were also imposed on Ole Miss's program as a result.

Still, Freeze was a hot property on the coaching market.

Freeze had discussions with Auburn, Tennessee and Florida State about their vacant offensive coordinator positions in recent weeks.

"I like coming into places where the environment, in this case, is good for my family", he said. "And I want to see the look in those kids' eyes when they get invited to a bowl game", Freeze said. "It's somewhere you're embraced and people understand grace and people celebrate you not only for who you are, but whose you are".

"I just felt like I love a challenge". That, combined with the values of the school, made the Liberty job too good to pass up. The relationship between Freeze and Liberty dates back to January when he and his wife spoke at convocation.

Liberty's decision to hire Freeze despite his scandalous past came as no surprise to some, given who it's hired in the past.

Freeze will replace Turner Gill, who retired after Liberty completed its inaugural Football Bowl Subdivision season last weekend and went 6-6 in 2018. The Flames finished 6-6 this season, their first competing at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, and were 47-35 under Gill.
