On the eve of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac has surprised the media with a first look at an upcoming electric crossover SUV, perhaps the first of many electric vehicles to come for the marque.

In a shocking turn of events (pun intended), Cadillac revealed the design of its first electric vehicle during Sunday night's preview showing of the new 2020 XT6 crossover SUV, whose formal debut took place Monday at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. According to the company-issued report, this Cadillac EV will be based on GM's next-gen EV architecture. This will be the first model derived from GM's future EV platform.

The EV's name and specific details regarding its powertrain and range will be revealed closer to an also yet-unspecified launch window.

"It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility", explains Cadillac president Steve Carlisle. The electric Caddy crossover will be just the first in a range of vehicles to make use of the platform, which has been created to accommodate front-, rear- or all-wheel drive configurations. We're told this platform will feature battery and drive units designed for "maximum usability" throughout GM cars across different countries. But, other body styles will follow this crossover, and in short succession too - aforementioned flexibility means each future EV will have a short design and development time.

The new SUV EV will take on the likes of Tesla's own electric SUV, the Model X.
