The "competitor" Trump was referring to was the National Enquirer - which published a story that exposed damning text messages between Bezos and former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez.

Trump went on to suggest that Bezos and Amazon may lose the Washington Post, although there was no indication whether that might happen.

The Post published a bombshell report over the weekend about Trump's meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

US President Donald Trump has mocked Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos over his divorce in a tweet.

In a now-trending tweet, Trump sarcastically referred to the richest man alive as "Jeff Bozo", seemingly alluding to a fictional clown character, which was popular in the U.S. in 1960s.

Trump wished Bezos "luck" on this divorce on Thursday, adding "It's going to be a beauty".

Trump dice que si ataca a los kurdos, Turquía sufrirá devastación

In a jaw-dropping tweet President Donald Trump touted coverage by an unidentified Washington Post "competitor" - though clearly the National Enquirer - of the story behind the breakup of Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos' marriage.

The Enquirer is a longtime ally of Trump's, and its publisher admitted in December to having bought the rights to ex-playmate Karen McDougal's story of an affair with Trump so that it could quash it using a "catch and kill" deal.

Trump has also always been critical towards Bezos, who bought the Washington Post - a publication the President has attacked for its agenda against his administration - in 2013. Trump phoned into Fox News on Saturday night to refute the article, saying: "I'm not keeping anything under wraps, I couldn't care less".

The president also has a history of animosity toward Amazon.
