Wolf Blood Super Moon will be visible from Northern Ireland

On Sunday night, the air will be cold and the sky will be clear for most of the country as a total lunar eclipse bathes the moon in an eerie blood-red hue.

Sullivan, who objects to the recent trend of naming ordinary full moons and celestial events with words like "super" and "blood", said there is, however, a legitimately interesting lunar event coming: a total eclipse. Then there's the supermoon part, meaning the moon is at the point in its orbit where it's just a little bit closer to us, making it seem 10 to 15 percent larger in the sky.

"Wolf Moon" - a Native American term used to describe the first full moon of the year. From Hawaii to ME, all 50 states will have a chance to see it - the most widely visible lunar eclipse in the United States since October 2014.

Hence, the Super Blood Wolf Moon.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon, Earth and sun line up with us being in the middle.

It is the last chance for United Kingdom observers to see a total lunar eclipse in its entirety until 2029. During the eclipse, our planet's shadow is projected onto the full Moon, slowly darkening its surface until it's completely covered.

In recent years, a number of blood moons have captured global attention, causing some to speculate about a possible connection to prophecy and the End Times.

The eclipse will happen in the early morning of Monday January 21 when the Moon start to darken at 2.35am with full eclipse beginning at 4.40am.

Depending on where you are in the country, the moon might "turn a copper-orange-reddish color", according to a January 7 article Forbes magazine. Sadly most of New Zealand will miss out - with the eclipse being only visible in the top half of the North Island at moon set, Nasa predicts. Sunday's observatory event is all-ages and doors open at 8:30 p.m. Ticket price is by donation only. Day - off, so have no worries about staying up late howling at the SUPER BLOOD WOLF MOON.

The sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, which filters out most of the blue light.

According to the Irish Astronomical Association, which is based in Northern Ireland, you won't need any special telescope to observe the eclipse, but a pair of binoculars will allow you to view the changing colours as it develops. It could look reddish (a "blood moon"). But National Weather Service cloud-cover forecasts show that the Northeast and much of the West might have their views obscured.
