Health department warns of measles exposure in Denver area

Denver Public Health, along with the Denver Denver Department of Public Health & Environment and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment are working to notify people who may have been exposed to measles during this time. All of those infected were children: 13 cases were in kids 1 to 10 years old and three cases involved teens 11 to 18 years old.

The two new confirmed cases are among unvaccinated children who visited two public locations while they were contagious.

The health department identified several medical facilities, including PeaceHealth Urgent Care - Memorial, Magnolia Family Clinic, The Vancouver Clinic and other emergency rooms as potential locations of exposure, with a timeline dating back to as early as December 31.

It is important to call first because measles is highly infectious, and people with measles can infect others around them for example in waiting rooms of GP surgeries or ED. Measles is spread by tiny droplets in the air and is one of the few diseases that can spread so easily to those nearby.

Magnolia Family Clinic, 2207 NE Broadway, Suite 200, Portland from 11:30 am to 3 pm Tuesday, Jan. 8.

"Most Oregonians have been vaccinated against measles and their risk is low", said Dr. Paul Cieslak, medical director for Communicable Diseases for the Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division. In nearby New Jersey, officials reported 33 cases, according to The New York Times.

Children who've not been vaccinated are being kept out of schools, child care facilities and similar settings.
