Southampton rocked as Derby win FA Cup shoot-out

Derby County are in talks to sign former Chelsea and England left-back Ashley Cole on a deal until the end of the season.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted the most positive aspect of his first cup replay as a manager was the opportunity to clear the suspensions of Yan Valery, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Charlie Austin before Saturday's Premier League clash with Everton.

"I thought we were outstanding in the game and some of the first half football was brilliant too".

Having avoided falling behind when VAR dubiously ruled out a goal from Derby's Craig Bryson in the first half, Saints went ahead through Stuart Armstrong's 68th minute header.

The clubs drew 2-2 at Pride Park on January 5, with a Nathan Redmond 2-0 lead going to waste for the Premier League visitors.

Both Southampton goals were also referred to VAR, but the drama with the video assistant wasn't over.

Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson has made somewhat of a name for himself scoring free-kicks this season, and he was back at it on Wednesday night.

Just six minutes later, Martyn Waghorn headed Derby's equaliser from Wilson's superb cross to force extra-time.

And Lampard's Championship promotion chasers, who knocked Manchester United out of the League Cup earlier this season, claimed another top-flight scalp in the shoot-out. Derby captain Richard Keogh's effort sealed Derby's progress.

"I'm delighted for the team and the squad".

Lampard refused to comment on the matter before kickoff.

And so with Derby through to the fourth-round of the competition to face Accrington Stanley, what did we learn?
