High Wind Warning for Sunday night/Monday morning


Areas around the shorelines of Lake Huron will see some snow today and Huron and Sanilac Counties have a Winter Weather Advisory for a couple of inches of new snow, and some slippery streets through noon today as well. Strong winds may blow down limbs, trees and power lines.

Andrew Cuomo is warning residents to prepare for potentially risky conditions as an arctic cold front brings wind chill temperatures below zero for most of the state.

Conditions are expected to slowly moderate through Monday, but as of Sunday afternoon the temperature remained a frigid -25 C in Sudbury, with north winds gusting to 42 km/hr and making it feel like -38 C.

FOX 29 meteorologists say frigid temperatures with strong winds up into 35 miles per hour or higher in some areas could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

In the Lower Hudson Valley, there's concern for flash freezing on the roads.

Those driving or walking should be prepared for slippery roads and walkways, and use extra caution, according to the Weather Service.

It remains very cold through Tuesday mid-day and then temperatures slowly climb into the low 20s.

Before an outage, charge cell phones, gather supplies and turn refrigerator and freezers to a colder setting.

People are also reminded to keep their pets indoors.
